Doniphan West Prom Part 2: D-West After Prom fun and additional photos.
On Saturday, April 25, D-West students stepped back in time for a glamorous evening inspired by "The Great Gatsby." With a theme of elegance and sparkle, prom featured gold, black, and white decorations that transformed the night into a scene straight from the Roaring Twenties.
The evening began on the front lawn of Highland Community College, where students gathered for pictures with family and friends.
From there, the students participated in the traditional walk-in. Families, friends, and community members lined the street to watch as couples and groups made their grand entrances into the Highland Christian Church Fellowship Hall, where the dinner and dance were held. Inside, the room was beautifully decorated with elegant gold, black, and white accents that perfectly captured the spirit of the theme.
Dinner was served with a choice of lasagna or chicken alfredo, along with salad, green beans, garlic toast, and white cake for dessert.
Once dinner ended, the dance floor quickly came alive.
But the fun did not stop there. After the dance, students loaded onto a bus and traveled to Belt Bowl for post-prom activities. There, they enjoyed bowling, arcade games, and more late-night fun before returning to Highland for prizes.
Prom sponsors Erica Scholz and Sharelle Blevins, the juniors, and a host of parents worked hard to make the evening special for students, creating a night full of elegance, laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime.

The month of March is recognized as Youth Art Month nationwide. In participation with YAM, every school in Kansas is invited to submit one piece of artwork to represent their school at the Topeka Public Library. This year, Miles McVicker's "My Own Last Supper" was chosen to represent DWES. Miles did a great job drawing a picture of his parents with lots of attention to detail. Great job Miles! We are proud of you!

6th Grade Kite Flying Fun!
After learning about weather, including different types of fronts and how wind moves, 6th-grade students put their knowledge into action by creating tetrahedron kites using straws, tissue paper, string, and glue.
With excitement in the air, they took their colorful creations outside to share with the elementary students—and to see just how high they could fly! Some kites soared high into the sky, making it an unforgettable sight.
Laughter, learning, and a little friendly competition filled the afternoon, and even a few staff members joined in the high-flying fun. What a great day of hands-on learning and sky-high smiles! 🪁

The 2nd-grade students celebrated their “Good Old Days” on Wednesday, April 15. Throughout the afternoon, they explored what life was like in the past by learning about train signals using a lantern and how to use a rotary telephone. They also observed a variety of vintage items, including an old stroller, keys, toy trucks, and a hand saw. Students discovered that ice was once delivered in large blocks and had to be broken into smaller pieces with an ice pick. The highlight of the afternoon was a ride in a Model A car. It was a fun-filled day of learning, curiosity, and smiles for everyone!
