Doniphan West Girls Capture Regional Title; Mustangs Headed to State Meet
WINCHESTER, KANSAS — The Doniphan West High School track and field team performed excellently at the Class 2A Regional Meet held Thursday, May 22, at Jefferson County North High School. The girls’ team claimed the Regional Championship, and several Mustangs earned the chance to compete at the KSHSAA State Track & Field Championships, set for May 30–31 at Cessna Stadium at Wichita State University.
Regional Champions and State Qualifiers
Freshman Reese McCauley led the charge, capturing three Regional titles and setting a new school record. She won the 100-meter hurdles (16.84), the 300-meter hurdles (47.07), and cleared 5’ 0” to win the high jump.
Andi Foster was crowned Regional Champion in the long jump, reaching 16’ 6.5”, and also qualified for state in the triple jump with a 3rd place finish (33’ 9.25”). Kayte Falk joined them as a high jump state qualifier, finishing 3rd with a mark of 4’ 10”.
Belle Smith advanced in the 3200-meter run, finishing 2nd in 12:47.73. Doniphan West’s relay teams also earned state bids: the 4x100-meter relay team—Jaidyn Smith, Foster, Falk, and Courtney Johnson—ran 52.25 to place 3rd, and the 4x400-meter relay team of Falk, Smith, Johnson, and McCauley ran 4:17.12 to take 2nd.
On the boys’ side, Kelby Windmeyer advanced with a 2nd place finish in the 200 meters (23.36) and a strong 4th place finish in the 100 meters (11.83). Teammate Hudson Ingmire earned his spot at state with 3rd place finishes in both the 100 meters (11.76) and 200 meters (23.54).
Additional Performances
Courtney Johnson placed 4th in the 100m finals (13.76), just outside of qualifying.
Kayte Falk ran 28.08 for 5th in the 200m.
Cassidy Blanton placed 7th in both the 800m (2:47.55) and 1600m (6:11.32).
Kya Keller was 5th in the long jump (15’ 5.5”).
Melissa Schurr placed 6th in the pole vault.
H’Leigha Idol placed 5th in both shot put (29’ 10”) and discus (98’ 5”).
Judd Prawl and Eli Gibson finished 7th and 8th in shot put, respectively.
Isaac Idol, Bronson Koehler, and Derek Blanton competed in distance events, with strong efforts in the 1600m and 3200m runs.
